Dr. Natalie explains why she created Anxiety Comfort.
Anxiety Comfort was actually a product that I had to work really hard to get created. We researched it for about a year, and then it took about two years to work with various scientists and product developers in order to find a product that was safe, would work, and that kids would take. I think a lot of parents were surprised (even pre-pandemic) when they saw the rise in anxiety in their elementary aged kids.
• Having a hard time falling asleep
• Waking up a lot at night
• Crawling into bed with us,
• Having a tantrum when it's time for drop-off
Physical symptoms of anxiety in children that sometimes parents don't think about:
• Complaints of abdominal pain
• Poor digestion
Anxiety at its core is an activation of the sympathetic nervous system, which is your fight or flight mechanism. When your body is stressed with anxiety, it's not really concerned about digestion or higher thought.
The immediate relief that you'll get is from the magnesium and L-Theanine. Magnesium is the big mineral of the parasympathetic nervous system. It literally does everything to counter sympathetic nervous system overdrive. It can help with headaches, constipation, muscle tension, sleep... so magnesium is probably one of the greatest minerals for kids, particularly those that are more high-strung. Magnesium comes in a lot of different forms, so depending on which form of magnesium you choose, it targets different parts of the body. We tried to choose a magnesium that was well-tolerated and has a broad spectrum of action throughout the body.
L-Theanine: The extract of green tea, which is one of the reasons you can drink green tea that's high in caffeine and still feel calm, has been used for a very, very long time and is extremely safe for children. At low doses, it helps them feel calm and focused. At high doses, it makes them feel sleepy.
5-HTP: The building block of serotonin.
The L-Theanine and magnesium will help them call down and go to sleep. The 5-HTP will do its work over 2-3 weeks and start ramping up serotonin production, and then hopefully you'll have a good clinical outcome and decreased symptoms. You'll have a child who's a lot happier and calmer, and when they're calmer they can focus, and when they focus they can learn, and when they learn they feel empowered... and then school becomes a completely different thing. They want to go to school.
